How to File ITR Online FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27)

Introduction :

Filing an income tax return can feel like a chore, but doing it online has become far easier. The portal now pre fills much of your data, such as salary, interest and TDS, so most of the work is checking and confirming. Taxpayers who keep clean records through the year usually finish their return in a fraction of the time.

This guide walks you through the full process for the financial year ended 31 March 2026 (AY 2026-27). You will see who needs to file, which form to choose, the exact steps on the e filing portal and what to do if you have missed the original date. Since the guide covers both individual and business filers, it also points out where good bookkeeping, such as a tool like Ledgers, helps you avoid mistakes.

Who Needs to File an ITR ?

You generally need to file if your income is above the basic exemption limit under your chosen tax regime. Filing is also required in some cases even when income is lower, such as when you:

  • Deposited large amounts in bank accounts or spent heavily on foreign travel or electricity, above prescribed limits
  • Hold assets or income outside India
  • Want to claim a refund of excess TDS
  • Need to carry forward losses
  • Run a business or profession with turnover above the stated limits

Even if filing is not mandatory, a return is useful proof of income for loans, visas and tenders.

Key Dates and Deadlines :

The usual due dates for this year were 31 July 2026 for non audit individuals filing ITR 1 or ITR 2, 31 August 2026 for non audit individuals and professionals filing ITR 3 or ITR 4, and 31 October 2026 for audit cases. These dates may have changed through official notifications, so always confirm on the income tax portal.

If you missed the original date, a belated return can still be filed until 31 December 2026, and a revised return can be filed until 31 March 2027, subject to current rules. An updated return is also possible for a longer period, with additional tax.

Documents to Keep Ready :

Gathering documents first saves time. You will usually need:

  • PAN, Aadhaar and bank account details
  • Form 16 from your employer, plus salary slips if needed
  • Annual Information Statement and Form 26AS, which show TDS and reported income
  • Interest certificates from banks and post offices
  • Capital gains statements for shares, mutual funds or property
  • Rent receipts, home loan certificates and investment proofs for deductions
  • For business owners, profit and loss accounts, balance sheet, GST data and expense records

If you run a business, keep sales, purchases and expenses updated in Ledgers so your income figures match your invoices and tax records.

Choose the Right ITR Form :

Picking the wrong form can lead to a defective return notice. In short:

  • ITR 1: Resident individuals with salary, pension, one or two house properties and other income within the prescribed limit
  • ITR 2: Individuals and HUFs with no business income but with capital gains, foreign assets or higher income
  • ITR 3: Individuals and HUFs with business or professional income
  • ITR 4: Resident taxpayers opting for presumptive taxation
  • ITR 5, 6 and 7: Firms and LLPs, companies, and trusts or other entities

Check eligibility conditions on the portal before you begin.

Step by Step Process to File ITR Online :

Follow this simple process:

  • Log in. Go to the income tax e filing portal and sign in with your PAN and password.
  • Start the return. Open the income tax return option under e file, select assessment year 2026-27 and choose the online mode.
  • Select status and form. Choose individual, HUF or another status, then pick the correct form.
  • Review pre filled data. Check salary, interest, TDS and other details against your documents.
  • Add missing income. Enter capital gains, rental income, business income or other sources.
  • Choose the tax regime. Compare the new and old regimes. The new regime applies by default unless you opt out where allowed.
  • Claim deductions. If you pick the old regime, add eligible deductions and exemptions.
  • Review the tax computation. Check the tax payable or refund.
  • Pay any balance tax. Pay through the portal before submitting.
  • Preview and submit. Review everything once more and submit the return.

How to E Verify Your Return ?

Your return is not complete until it is verified. You can e verify using:

  • Aadhaar OTP
  • Net banking
  • Bank account or demat account based EVC
  • A digital signature certificate, where applicable

Verification is generally required within 30 days of filing. If you skip it, the return may be treated as not filed. After verification, you can download the acknowledgement and track refund status on the portal.

Late Filing, Revised Returns and Penalties :

Missing the original date has consequences:

  • Late fee. A fee can apply for late filing, generally up to ₹5,000, or up to ₹1,000 when total income is not above ₹5 lakh.
  • Interest. Interest on unpaid tax can apply for each month of delay.
  • Loss carry forward. Some losses may not be carried forward if you file after the due date.
  • Revised return. If you find an error after filing, a revised return can correct it within the allowed period.

Rules and amounts can change, so confirm the current position on the official portal or with a tax professional.

Common Mistakes to Avoid :

Many notices come from avoidable errors. Watch out for:

  • Choosing the wrong ITR form
  • Ignoring mismatches between AIS, Form 26AS and your own records
  • Forgetting interest income or small capital gains
  • Claiming deductions without proof
  • Not reporting foreign assets where required
  • Skipping e verification
  • Filing at the last minute without checking details

Most of these come down to messy or incomplete records, and that is exactly what Ledgers software fixes. It keeps every invoice, expense, and income entry in one place all year, so you can reconcile your books against AIS and Form 26AS in minutes, catch interest income and small gains before they slip through, and attach proof to every deduction you claim.
